Cosmic Tombak

cosmictombak500.jpg

A tombak (also known as tonbak, donbak, dombak and zarb) is a goblet drum from Iran. It is considered the principal percussion instrument of Persian music. A tombak player holds the drum diagonally across his lap with the wider section usually over his right side and plays it with the fingers and the palm of the hands.

Abjeez

Abjeez is Iran's answer to BeeGees!
Abjeez is persian slang for sisters and that’s just what they are - Safoura and Melody Safavi. Backed by a group of musicians, the two sisters present their own brand of Persian pop.

Mercan Dede

dervish.jpg

Last night I went to the gig by the Turkish DJ Mercan Dede. His music is a great fusion of rhythmic Middle Eastern grooves played by Clarinet, Qanún, Drums and Ney. It all held together by Mercan on deck and helped by the entrancing sight of a whirling dervish. Great Stuff!
You can download and listen to his music here.
